The pub, owned by Pub and Kitchen Ltd, closed on August 4 and now regulars have started moves to have a say in the future of the pub. The campaign group Save the Brighton Dyke gathered to rally outside the pub on Sunday afternoon. The group has attracted nearly 400 members herschel crossbody to their Facebook group calling for the pub to be kept open for the community. Mother of three, Poll Jordan, a regular at the pub, said: "There was no hint of it closing at all. It seemed very sudden. The group is seeking legal advice to attempt to list the pub as an asset of community value allowing them a chance to bid for the pub if it is sold. According to one staff member, who wanted to remain anonymous, the 20 staff were given no notice the pub would close. They said: "The first I heard the pub was closed was on Facebook it was very shocking having no notice I has lost my job. "I'm not kate spade discount dresses really surprised it went down but to have been given notice would have been far more appropriate."The employee who was on a zero hour contract said the owner had paid the money they were owed and promised an extra week of pay." Owner Martin Webb, who ran the pub for seven years, said the pub was struggling to make a profit over the last 18 months. He said: "We've done absolutely everything we can to keep the pub going. I've thrown the book at it and I've used my whole 30 years of experience to try and make it work but it kate spade canada still hasn't turned around. If you went there on a Saturday evening it was a ghost town that was the problem. The pub WAS heaving/busy 18 months ago then the owners seemed to change tack in a way that almost overnight sent trade plunging. The food prices went up, the quality went down, crucially they stopped serving food between 2 and 5pm (the pub used to be VERY busy with after school trade between these hours, they had special offers for the kids, and it drew in loads of families, including ours, who subsequently used it for more expensive celebrations with family and friends). Instead they opened a coffee shop which was doomed to failure from the start it had a very limited food/drink offer (a few cakes and very well made coffee) and is right opposite a proper cafe in Dyke rd park which has a full offer and a nice terrace to boot. They have their own terrible strategy to blame for running down trade. This is a premises that could be a great neighbourhood restaurant in an area that in fact has no others within a 15 minute or so walk and with an affluent population keen to dine out. (Chimney House is the nearest, or Good companions both around 15 mins away). It's also big enough to develop as a 'destination' restaurant to draw people from outside the area. The owners DID NOT throw everything they had at it it looks rather as if they ran it down on purpose. can't it's closed. The pub was definitely losing a lot of money and having tried various things to breathe life into it they finally gave up. Gastro pub, Pizza pub, special offers etc. NickBrt is right if you don't use it you lose it. This is the same story we have heard so many times here in Brighton and around the country. Pubs that are virtually empty for three or four nights of the week, gets busy on three nights and those customers think the pub is like that all week long. The Horse and Groom, The Rosehill Tavern, The Greys (still open but only just), The Queen Victoria people just weren't using these "popular" pubs. Martin Webb bought the freehold of the Dyke in an effort to get away from the extortionate rents of Enterprise Inns but of course that will have come at a cost. I do hope the locals manage to do something to get their pub reopened but if they do they HAVE TO USE IT. I spoke to someone on the inside of the company last night. I stopped going aboyt two years ago (after being a regular since it opened under the current ownership). for a while it was great good selection of weel kept beers, nice sstaff. I stopped after having to send three pints back over three consequtive visits because they were undrinkable. the last time the staff were really rude about it, although they obviously knew nothing about what a pint is meant to taate like (longman btw). Hearing the owner moaning about no one going in when his pretentions to 'gastro pub' were a mis judged use of the place is shocking. give it to the fella who runs the Basketmakers!!! use it or lose it? That, combined with all tables being 'reserved' for cheap pizza eating families with out of control kids, and saturdays having some crap 'friends of the staff' soul band in a venue far too small, along with half the floorspace constantly empty set aside as a 'restaurant', and a dirty, unkempt garden, I could go on. hopefully there can be some kind of local by out (the closest pubs are in port hall and seven dials) and we could actually get a community pub there. That would be wonderful.
